Gum Disease Therapy
What is Gum Disease?
Also called periodontal disease, gum disease is a generally non-painful, persistent infection and the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. It begins when hardened plaque, known as calculus or tartar, irritates sensitive gum tissue. Common initial symptoms include painless bleeding, swelling, or redness of the gums. Many patients don't know that they have early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. Left untreated, gum disease can cause increased risk for heart attacks, stoke, respiratory problems, osteoporosis, and other overall health problems.
Prevention and Treatment
The best way to avoid gum disease is by first understanding how it occurs. Our hygiene team can help you determine an effective way of removing the offending bacteria and recommend changes in your brushing and flossing, as well as mouth rinses, to correct early-stage gum disease. We also offer scaling and root planing to remove tartar and clean areas prone to plaque build up.
If you notice redness, swelling, bleeding, or tenderness in your gums, call 480-451-0908 immediately to schedule an appointment with Dr. Poyak and our hygiene team.
